Make Yourself a Stronger Food & Beverage Candidate by Sharing Others’ Content

Looking for fresh ways to stand out from job competitors and get noticed by recruiters as a food and beverage candidate?

Maintaining a professional blog or social media account is a perfect place to start. Well written content is ideal for:

  • showcasing your business acumen;
  • sharing your unique thoughts; and
  • demonstrating that you stay current on trends affecting your industry.

But what if you’re not a great writer? And what if you don’t have the time to regularly craft original content?

Many professionals, while talented, don’t have the writing skills or available hours to maintain a top-notch food & beverage industry blog (believe us, we know how much effort it takes!). If you fall into this category, and you want to move up the career ladder, you do have another option. You can share others’ content:

  • Aggregate and share your favorite content from food & beverage thought leaders.
  • Provide your own take on someone else’s blog post or article.
  • Ask a colleague or mentor to write a guest post for you.
  • Interpret the data in infographics.

No matter how you choose to share others’ content, the practice says a lot about you as a professional:

  • You’re on top of your game. Sharing content shows that you pay attention to what’s going on in our industry and are committed to continuous learning. Over time, recruiters and other industry professionals will realize that you “know your stuff.”
  • You’re helpful. Selecting topics that are interesting and relevant to your readers demonstrates your desire to help others. It strikes the right balance between selflessness and self-promotion.
  • You’re forward-thinking. Not only are you using the latest technology to connect with other professionals; you’re seeking out the latest trends, developments and news in the food & beverage industry.

Here are a few recommendations for sharing others’ content the right way:

  1. Scrutinize content before sharing. Always, always read before you share. Make sure the content is well constructed, interesting, timely and relevant. What you share is a reflection of who you are as a professional.
  2. Don’t flood channels. “More” is not always better when it comes to content-sharing, so exercise restraint. If you indiscriminately post and tweet about everything you come across, people will, at best, ignore what you share and may even block or unfollow you. Providing updates once or twice a week is sufficient for heightening your visibility and making a lasting, positive impression.
  3. Include a comment. If you share an article on, say, LinkedIn, don’t just post the link. Include your own opinion of the article or highlight your favorite takeaway. To maximize the value of sharing, show that you’ve read the content, understand it and have your own unique thoughts about it.
  4. Consider sharing “debatable” content. Controversy sparks interest. Use this fact to your advantage, by occasionally sharing content that addresses debatable issues. Remember, however, to detail your own take on the piece (see number 3) – especially if it’s something with which you disagree.
