5 Details to Leave Off of Your Resume

If you are looking for an executive level job, you need to make sure your resume is polished and professional. However, some things that might work for lower-level positions can actually hurt your chances of landing a senior role. Here are 5 things to leave off your resume if you want to impress potential employers and recruiters.

1. Objective Statement.

An objective statement is outdated and often generic. Instead of stating what you want from the employer, use a summary statement that highlights what you can offer them. A summary statement should be a brief introduction that showcases your key skills, experience, and value proposition.

2. References.

It is assumed that you have references available upon request, so you don’t need to waste space on your resume by listing them. You can prepare a separate document with your references’ contact details and provide it when asked.

3. Irrelevant Work Experience.

You don’t need to list every job you ever had on your resume, especially if they are not related to the industry or function you are targeting. Focus on the most recent and relevant positions that showcase your skills and achievements.

4. Too Many Details.

While you want to highlight your accomplishments and quantify your impact, you don’t want to overwhelm the reader with too much information. Use bullet points and concise language to convey your value proposition. Avoid long paragraphs and unnecessary jargon.

5. Salary Expectations.

You don’t need to include your salary expectations on your resume unless the employer explicitly asks for them. Salary expectations are a sensitive topic that should be discussed with your recruiter, or during the interview stage, not before. Including them on your resume might limit your options.
